Looking up…

The user agent is the string your browser sends with every request to state its name, version and operating system. See exactly what yours sends and reuse the value in compatibility tests and server rules.

How it works

  1. 1Open the page and copy the string shown.
  2. 2Compare browser, version and system with what you expect.
  3. 3Paste the value into testing tools, firewall rules or access-log analysis.

Why is the string so long?

Browsers keep historical fragments for compatibility: Chrome still announces Safari, and on iOS every browser uses the system engine, which shows up in the string.

Does a user agent identify a person?

Not by itself. It describes software, not individuals. Combined with IP and cookies it can contribute to fingerprinting, which is why modern browsers freeze parts of the string.
