Find out which DNS server answers on your behalf and where it is located. The result helps identify an active VPN, your provider's resolver, or one configured manually on the router.
How it works
- 1Open the page and wait for the diagnostic service to answer.
- 2Read the resolver address and its approximate location.
- 3Compare with the DNS you configured, or with your provider's defaults, to confirm what is in use.
Provider DNS or public resolver?
Your provider's resolver usually has lower latency because it sits closer. Public resolvers such as 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 can be more stable and offer privacy features, at a small distance cost.
What is a DNS leak?
With a VPN connected, queries should travel through the tunnel. If your provider's resolver appears, queries are leaking and the network still sees which sites you visit.
